Journal

Overview
The Journal, previously known as the Codex, is where the Envoy's journey and discoveries are recorded as they explore the world of Alca. It is organised by the Envoy's scribe,
Orlick the Bicameral, into multiple categories as shown below. It also provides several Suggested Activities.
Naming
Upon completion of "A Title" for
Orlick, the Envoy may choose one of six names for their Journal.
- Chronicles of Carnage
- Feybles of a Fiend
- Healer's Handbook
- Alcan Almanac
- Codexicon
- Book
The chosen name will then replace the "Journal" category in the player's menu. This choice is purely cosmetic and has no effect on gameplay, but is permanent.
Journal Categories
Journal
The Journal tab displays the Envoy's progress through their current task, and information as to their next objective.
Ancestors
The Ancestors are key NPCs who join the Envoy on their journey. They inhabit the player's Nightfold, each offering key gameplay mechanics and interactions. However, this Journal tab also includes information on other key characters such as Enclave Leaders and Omen Beasts.
Foes
Foes can be encountered throughout Midrath. Completing A Grand Fable allows the Envoy to fill their Journal through Smite.
Animals
Completing Blessings of Battle allows the Envoy to scribe charmed Animals to their Journal.
Suggested Activities
At the bottom of the Journal, up to three suggested activities will appear to help guide progression. These may include the following:

Foes
In order to complete the Foes category of the Journal, each enemy must be Pull Smitten 5 times. This first requires completion of A Grand Fable to obtain Scrying Smite.
Completing Bastions of Rebellion and A Coven's Cauldron will each reward a Quickened Quill, reducing the amount of Smites required to complete an entry.
Several abilities and upgrades that increase Smite Chance can also make completing entries easier, such as:
Orengall's
Howl.
Smiting Stag.- Flyblades with the Twist of Luck Combat Art.
- Weapons with the Smitten Combat Art.
- Weapons with the Sullying Force Temper.
Below is a list of all Foes as they appear in the Journal, including bugs and in-game typos so that the user may cross-reference against their own Journal. Note this not all Foes in the game; see Foes for a complete list.
Animals
Complications
Some Journal entries may be incompletable due to bugs.
| Name | Type | Completable? | Bug? | Info |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [PH] | Mendicant | No | Yes | Does not appear in-game. |
| Banneret Styne ("Sinecure Officer") | Ode | Yes | No | Can be completed by Smiting Banneret Styne during the Fable "The Shewolf Snared". However, Orengall will appear almost immediately and instantly kill Styne, preventing Smite. One must be incredibly quick to have a chance Smite Styne, and then immediately log out as soon as Orengall attacks, regardless of whether or a Smite was obtained. This will place the player just before the Ode'n Bisulcam fight, allowing for multiple Smites. |
| Mendicant Reinbreaker | Mendicant | No | Yes | Does not appear in-game. |
| Mendicant Reinbreaker (2) | Mendicant | No | Yes | Does not appear in-game. |
| Sinecure Officer (2) | Ode | No | Yes | Does not appear in-game. |
| Wazzard of Wastes | Mendicant | Yes | No | Only found during the Fable "The Waste Bear". Logging out immediately after performing a Smite will save the Journal entry progress but place the player just before the fight, allowing for multiple Smites. |
| Will-o-wing | Flora | Yes | No | Can only be Smitten using |
