Lore & History
From the depths of the Ichor-grave, he rises. Crowned and seated upon a corrupted throne, the Mendicant King commands the battlefield with slow, deliberate cruelty. Those struck by his gaze may find themselves bound to his will. Face him in battle, and expect no mercy. He does not fight alone.
An ancient Midrathian King of Old Curlail. He and his knights perished during The Fonnish Charge. From the depths of
grave, the King and his knights now rise in gruesome unlife, seeking to make Alca just as undead as themselves.
Born during the rule of Clan Jotar, the one known as the Mendicant King ruled over the Dendrit hamlet of Curlail within the legendary fortress of Fort Curlail. His order would go on to build the old Fonnish Fort, used by the King's small but mighty loyalist army as a training ground.
Shortly after, during the year of 717, the Mendicant King would receive word that an unknown enemy would befall Curlail and his fortress at nightfall. Leading his men southwards to meet them, all would inevitably perish on that wretched march even before they could draw their swords.
Once word returned, the Ladies of Curlailan court would instead don the ancient's armour to hold and defend their keep, becoming the Knightmaidens in the process.
Eras rose and fell. The Ode would descend, and their towers would fall. Until at last, the knights and their Mendicant King climbed from the grave. Once a knight, pure and true, he is now an ichorous, undead creature who commands all to bow within the wastes.
Queen
Muireall Jotarwould have been 48 years old in 717, on the date of the ill-fated Fonnish Charge. Due to their close rulings, The Mendicant King may have gotten his title by marrying Muireall during her reign.
Location
The Mendicant King can be found within the Corrupted port town of Stroaic, an ichorous waste located on the southwestern coast of Midrath.
If the Mendicant King is currently spawnable, his petrified frame will be sat in front of a melted and warped throne with a giant bell hanging from an archway behind it. If the boss is on cooldown, the throne will lie empty.
In order to wake the King and begin the fight, the player must ring the bell by striking it with any weapon. Upon doing so, the Mendicant King will de-petrify and rise to fight.
The Mendicant King can also potentially be found defending the exit inside the Rovgot Ruins. These Mendicant Kings do not count as Agari for The Cogah enemy levels and Talisman bonuses or
Orlick's Compendium of Foes "Slay Agari" task. They are also a higher level and possess no cooldown, meaning one can simply kill these Mendicant Kings as many times as they can be found.
Boss Fight
NOTE: The names of these attacks are unofficial, and will be updated if official names are revealed.
Upon rising from his throne, the Mendicant King will summon a number of
Mendicant Knights, who will continuously spawn until the fight is over. When the King dies, any remaining knights will die with him.
Knight Summon
The King will spawn mounds of solid Ichor in the battlefield, which will generate Knights after the King takes damage. If there are no Knights remaining, the Mendicant King will become weakened, his sword losing its energy aura.
Teleport
The Mendicant King charges up before swapping places with one of his soldiers. Shortly after, he will release a shockwave that does considerable damage and knocks Envoys prone. This attack is easily his most telegraphed, as the soldier that he swaps with will kneel down for a few seconds before the teleport. The range of the shockwave is denoted by a grid-like pattern on the ground, though the actual range may differ slightly.
Energy Slash
The Mendicant King's sword becomes wreathed in energy, greatly extending its range. He then attacks several times with it, dealing large amounts of damage. This attack has a wide range, and can quickly cut off a large amount of your health bar if you are not prepared. This attack has several variations to watch out for.
Petrifying Blast
The Mendicant King takes aim for several seconds before firing a projectile. His target is indicated by a bright blue beam coming from the King and tracking the target. These projectiles look similar in appearance to the voltaic projectiles fired by Ode'n casters, though they do not expand. Being hit by one projectile will cause an Envoy to be coated in a stone-like substance, slowing them down greatly.
Being hit by a second projectile during this time will petrify the Envoy, stunning them for several seconds and leaving them vulnerable to attack. Each projectile does not do much damage, but because of the petrification, this attack is one of his deadliest. The King will fire approximately 3 projectiles before performing other actions.
Trivia
- Ringing the bell again during the boss fight can stun the Mendicant King and other nearby foes if they're close enough to the throne.
- The Mendicant King is one of only five enemies in the game whose outfit can be obtained by the Envoy, alongside:
