Runes

Overview

Everflame Rune selected.
Runes are a Weapons upgrade system that modify playstyle, each allocated to a specific Combat Art. Alongside Totems, they form one of Soulframe's two Enchantment systems.
Runes are elemental powers woven into the flow of combat via a charge-based system:
- Obtain Rune charges by performing Pull Smites on Foes.
- Rune Charges are indicated by a gauge over the Spirit Arcanic.
- Elite enemies and above, such as Sinecure Knights, will yield two charges.
- Activate the equipped Rune at any time using RuneUnboundRuneMouse & KeyboardUnboundXboxUnboundPlayStationUnbound(unbound by default), or a combination of Spectral SightQSpectral SightMouse & KeyboardQXboxLBPlayStationL1+ Heavy AttackMouse Button 3Heavy AttackMouse & KeyboardMouse Button 3XboxRBPlayStationR1.
Multiple charges may be banked, and will be held indefinitely - allowing an Envoy to save this power for when it is needed most. Each activation consumes one charge.
Runes also unlock a fourth Totem slot when equipped, whose type will vary with each Rune.

Runes can be freely slotted in and out of weapons, are non-consumable, and are cross-build compatible - a Polearm Rune equipped on one Polearm, for example, does not need to be unequipped to use that same Rune on a different Polearm.
Index of Runes
Acquisition
Runes are primarily acquired by defeating Agari or Sieges around Midrath, though many have recently been added to Containers as well. Some runes can only be obtained whilst in the Cogah.
See each rune's individual page in the Index of Runes above for where to obtain it.
Upgrading Runes
Harmonies may be used via the Arsenal to upgrade the rank and effectiveness of Runes, up to a maximum of Rank 3.
Harmonies can be acquired by:
- Charming wild animals (the better you play, the more you earn)
- Freeing caged critters
- Releasing excess Totems/Runes from the Arsenal
See Harmonies for costs and required totals.
Releasing Runes
Choosing this action, a player can convert a Rune into a set amount of Harmonies, equal to 75% of the Harmony invested in the Rune. Players are prompted to confirm the action after clicking "Release Totem".

Trivia
- Prior to Preludes 14.5: Ode'n Tempers, the Rune Keybind did not exist, and Runes could only be activated using a combination of Spectral Sight + Heavy Attack (default Q + Mouse Button 3 ).
- Upon their original rework in Preludes 14, whilst charges were banked with each Smite as they are now, they were consumed automatically upon using a charged heavy attack. This was updated in Preludes 14 Hotfix 3 to allow Envoys the choice of whether or not to activate a Rune attack.
- Prior to the Rune Rework of Preludes 14, rather than the current charge-based system, Runes instead all exhibited duration-based effects which would activate immediately upon performing a Pull Smite.
- Runes were introduced in Preludes 11 alongside Totems as one of Soulframe's two Enchantments systems.
- Runes and Totems replaced the previous Motes System for enhancing items.
