Iridis

Iridis refers both to Alca's green-glowing moon, and the Deity for which it was named. He is one of the three primary Celestial Deities of Alca, alongside the twin suns

Knowledge of Iridis is said to bestow one with the Virtue of Spirit.

In Midrathian mythology, Iridis, bringer of life, is said to be the son to the bound suns

. As Iridis breathed our greatest heroes to life, so too did he birth our most horrid monsters. Before even the era of the Fey, Mora and Saphene were said to be entwined in a planet-rending fight^[1], after which, in the wake of Mora’s flame, the suns’ ashen babe Iridis was born.^[2] Upon his first days in Alca, it was said Iridis would drink the

Wevetwood Sap

of the Voicing Trees, whose sap granted drinkers dreams and visions of the future. A gift from Mother Suns- a sweet nectar for their suckling babe.^[3]

When the moon walked the world of Alca as man, he would go on to have three children of his own - constellations that bear multiple Virtues. The first child of Iridis was Oro, born half god, half sibyl (a greek word meaning a sage/oracle), who Iridis taught to see Algamest's great woven web.^[4]

The second born was Verus. A babe born in ice and silence. On the Isle where the suns never set, Verus is a secret to his father still.^[5] And finally, the youngest was beloved Paladine. Neither son nor daughter, with the strength of both in their twice-woven heart.^[6]

Upon ascending to the sky and becoming the moon, it is believed that Iridis’ many halos and rings are the final resting place of departed souls - the innermost of which is named Virdigris.^[7]

At last in the Era of Ancients, during the times of the Fey, even before the time of man, Iridis was the one to dig the very well that gave the Fey the magicks of Alca:

Alca's favored children, she decided to grant them a gift, a taste of her own magicks. Biding them to a forest clearing, the Fey would begin to serenade the moon. With a face glowing with pride, Iridis would cast a moonbeam so bright, it bore a hole straight to Alca's center. From this, the well of magick sprung forth.^[8]

Iridis is highly revered by the Order of the Gyres. Servants of Iridis and his many halos, the Order held its tribunals on the highest floor of their watchtower of Moon's Watch when his light was full and bright over the sea. Members of the order, such as Atajan, adorn themselves with fine silver and curved blades.

Iridis’ patron Omen Beast is said to be a great whale that glows blue, who serenades the moon’s rise with its song.^[9]
